The anniversary year has quietly become a Mewtwo story
The new 10th Anniversary Celebration Research ends with a Mewtwo whose stats are maxed out. It carries a Special Background and already has the third Mega Level unlocked for Mega Mewtwo Y.
That reward follows months of unusually prominent Mewtwo appearances. Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y debuted during Pokémon GO Fest 2026, turning one of the franchise's oldest Legendary Pokémon into a centerpiece of the game's tenth-year events.
Then came New York. On July 9, Pokémon GO's Times Square anniversary celebration put Mewtwo across the district's giant screens and gathered players for a large in-person event built around its Mega Evolutions. It was the sort of spectacle location-based games are uniquely equipped to produce: a digital creature temporarily taking over a physical landmark while the audience underneath it is playing the same game.
The August giveaway takes the opposite approach. No trip to Manhattan, no enormous raid crowd. Mewtwo becomes a global souvenir.
The reward is deliberately easy to obtain
There is very little ceremony in the Research itself. Catch ten Pokémon and the reward is a Master Ball. Power up Pokémon ten times and the reward is 500 Mewtwo Mega Energy. Finish the page and the special Mewtwo encounter follows.
For a game built on collection, probability and repeated attempts, guaranteeing maxed-out stats is a conspicuous choice. The Special Background pushes the Pokémon further toward commemorative object territory: this particular Mewtwo is meant to be identifiable as part of the anniversary, not merely another copy with a good appraisal.
Pokémon GO has increasingly used backgrounds, costumes and location-specific variants to give catches a history beyond their species. This one does not need a physical location, but it still carries a timestamp in everything but the literal date.
Times Square still gets to remain different
Players who caught Mewtwo at the July 9 Times Square event are treated separately. Pokémon GO says those Trainers will receive a Mewtwo with different stats and different rewards rather than the standard version of the worldwide offer.
The Times Square background is not being locked away forever. Pokémon GO has confirmed that a Mewtwo featuring it will become available again in the future, although it has not announced when.
That leaves the physical event with some distinction without turning its visual souvenir into a permanently inaccessible artifact.
Mewtwo is also waiting at the other end of the deadline
The Timed Research expires on September 6 at 11:59 p.m. local time, and players need to claim the rewards before it disappears.
September 6 is also the second day of Pokémon GO Fest 2026: Mega Finale. Mega Mewtwo X headlines Super Mega Raids on September 5, followed by Mega Mewtwo Y on September 6.
So the anniversary sequence ends much as it has been running: with Pokémon GO finding another way to put Mewtwo in front of millions of players. This time, at least, nobody needs to win a giant raid to get one.
